old vs. new.... difficulty of content and accessibility in MOP
« on: September 14, 2013, 01:36:56 AM »
This is a very frequently discussed topic, but it was brought up again yesterday in vent, and i believe it was jrail who brought up some very valid points on the other side.

If you ask veteran players, they will often say the game was at its best in burning crusade, when it was at its absolute most difficult. A lot of people i know say that the game is going downhill because of blizzard's desire to appeal to the casual gaming market. A very good friend of mine stopped playing wow in cata because of this, and he had been playing since vanilla on runetotem, and was absolutely a top tier hardcore raider.

The Problem in the Mists (of Pandaria)

This is a video that explains that whole side of the argument, and between listening to people like them, and on the other side, jrail, i gotta say im not sure what would be preferable. i was interested in other people's takes on it. What does the rest of UnF think?

I will counter with a similar video from the same chap. He says and I quote: "...any one of the (new)bosses has more mechanics than molten core combined."  as well as "The bosses(40 man) were tuned around 25 good players"

What Was Raiding Really Like in Classic WoW?

both points are valid. it's probably hard to find a good mix of old and new. but having more abilities is more fun than being forced into a spec to use 1 button.

ToT felt pretty good. SoO so far looks solidly designed.  I wasn't here when the other instances were "Hard", so I can't really judge them fairly - HoF and Terrace felt too "mechanicy" (to much "do this. Just because" type mechanics, not enough actual challenging decision making and strategizing.), and MSV was a little too simple. (but maybe felt good when it was new.)

I don't like some of the "do this or wipe the raid" mechanics. They feel like adding artificial difficulty just for the sake of - Nefarian was a cool fight, especially for the time. Algalon was "let's make this retarded hard for no reason other than to be retarded hard, for epeen rights.", and I didn't like the idea.

MoP seems better than Cata or Wrath, but not as good as BC, to me.

In three sentences.

I've played the game since day one. Had a few breaks. I am still here.

Same here, except I did rather enjoy the BC era and even into wrath, MoP brought back that feeling mostly. I'm certainly interested to see where they go from here

I have an amazing power...I post in a thread, and it dies.

My favorite raid was UBRS.  Loved Vael and Nef.

blood queen 25H - I like the mechanical complexity, personal responsibility and multiple phases that this fight delivered.

Kaelthas in Tempest Keep.

That fight just took it to the next level. It had everything, group coordination, small adds, big adds, specific positioning, hard dps requirements, interrupts, on use items, legendaries, and then...you get to fly.

From visuals to mechanics, this is the fight that really showed Blizz taking raiding beyond anything they had done before.

I don't think you could do all the gimmicks (err..  mechanics) in 40 man raids.  Too many people.  The difficult part of 40 man raids, were you had to deal with 40 different personalities.  It was as much a challenge as the game itself.

I still found it more enjoyable to have less mechanics and more people raiding.

Although, I can understand people enjoying the opposite of me.  Mechanics can be enjoyable and can be designed to increase difficulty.

But I have always been more a hack/slash kinda gamer.  Which was a big reason I played a rogue.

I gotta go with Karazhan for favorites. You got to act in a play, Maiden was a bitch for all casters, got to play chess. It had hidden bosses and buffs. And the music is pretty good as well.
